Lactose free?
you mean “Vegan”?

NO. OH GOD, PLEASE DO NOT EAT OUR ICE CREAM IF YOU’RE VEGAN (UNLESS IT’S SPECIFICALLY A VEGAN FLAVOR).

Lactose is just a type of sugar found in dairy. Our bodies produce an enzyme that breaks down that sugar. As we get older, our bodies slow down or stop producing the enzyme—and that’s what lactose intolerance is. About 70% of people are lactose intolerant.

To get around this, Bad Walter’s adds enzymes to our dairy that break down the lactose before you eat it.

If you’re not lactose intolerant, you’ll never know the difference. And if you are, you will thank us profusely.

LET’S TALK LACTOSE-FREE ICE CREAM

IS THERE LACTOSE-FREE ICE CREAM?

Heck yeah, there is! And you’re in the right place for it. Bad Walter’s makes the best lactose free ice cream in the bay area with rotating flavors every single week.

What is lactose free ice cream?

Simply put, lactose free ice cream is ice cream without the lactose. So ANYone — lactose-intolerant or not — can polish off a pint of it!

How do you make lactose-free ice cream?

At Bad Walters’ we use an enzyme called lactase that breaks down the lactose in the dairy products we use.

Want a nerdier explanation!?

Lactose is a type of sugar found in any dairy product. Most bodies produce an enzyme called lactase that breaks that sugar down into glucose and galactose. But some people don’t make enough of this enzyme — so they can’t break down lactose as easily! Also, as people get older, our bodies become worse and worse at producing this enzyme—and thus, worse at breaking down lactose.

So instead of relying on your body to break down the lactose, we pre-treat all of our dairy products with lactase before-hand—so everyone can enjoy Oakland’s best ice cream!

What’s the difference between lactose free ice cream and dairy free ice cream?

Lactose-free ice cream can still be made with 100% real dairy. Dairy-free ice cream is made with a dairy alternative like oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, or coconut milk.

So dairy-free ice cream is always lactose free, but lactose-free ice cream is not always dairy free.
